The Dental Implant Process
Here’s what our dental implant patients in Calera, AL can expect:
- First, you’ll undergo a medical evaluation to ensure you have enough bone to support a dental implant. If you don’t, you might need a bone graft.
- The titanium post of the dental implant is placed into the jaw bone under local anesthesia. The procedure typically takes an hour or two to complete.
- During the initial dental implant recovery process, you may experience some swelling and discomfort. For the first few days, stick to soft foods, avoid hot liquids, and don’t use straws. A warm salt water rinse is helpful for pain relief. Most patients are back to normal in just a few short days. - Next, the screw integrates with the bone through a process called osseointegration. This takes approximately three to six months. - The healing cap will be removed and the permanent implants will be surgically screwed to the “abutment teeth,” which are the surrounding teeth supporting the bridge or arch.
- After getting dental implants, brushing and flossing are still just as important, and you’ll need professional cleanings twice a year. During your dental cleaning appointments, a dentist can temporarily remove implant-supported dentures to thoroughly clean beneath the bridge and replace screws if necessary.

Implant-Supported Dentures vs. Implant-Retained Dentures: What’s the Difference?
Implant-supported dentures and implant-retained dentures are two types of dentures that are secured using dental implants. However, these dentures differ in the way they are attached to the implants and the level of stability they provide.
Implant-supported dentures are also known as fixed dentures. The replacement teeth are attached to dental implants using screws. These dentures are permanent and cannot be removed by the patient. Implant-retained dentures, on the other hand, are removable. They feature a bar attached to the dental implants, and the denture piece is simply clipped onto the bar using attachments or clasps.
